Probably the most brutally honest review I could give you. For a building that was only done up a few years ago it's more or less falling apart. Walls are literally crumbling to dust, there are cables hanging from the roof at the back of the building, the slightest bit of rain causes half of the ceilings to start leaking, causing a large amount of the ceiling tiles to turn brown due to dampness and grow mould, as well as a problem with leaky pipes in certain classrooms. It's also quite obvious that some areas of the school get cleaned once in a blue moon. Some classes are alright, specifically those of people in senior management, which is ironic considering they actually teach less classes. Other classes have desks that are genuinely falling apart and chairs that can really only be described as death traps considering they've probably been there since the dawn of time and are so flimsy that it takes the slightest push in the wrong direction to cause the metal legs to bend. Apart from the furniture, some classes are just in complete disarray and are either incredibly unorganised or have a complete lack of storage, whether this is a fault with the school or the teachers is probably up for debate. Now, you can't fault all of the teachers in the school because some of them are actually good at their job, enjoy it and find a way to relate to their student in order to actually earn their respect instead of demanding it like it's their god given right. However, those kinds of teachers are a minority and teachers are either far too forceful with teaching, to the point where they put so much added stress on their students that it's not uncommon to see students reduced to tears in lessons, or they've completely given up at ever teaching anyone anything and give the bare minimum effort during lessons, and no one ever really learns anything. It's also astounding to see how little the staff know about mental health and how many teachers will actually treat a pupils mental illness like an inconvenience considering there is actually a worryingly high number of pupils with mental health issues. The school does the bare minimum for mental illness. They'd rather spend money on completely useless things like barriers to separate queues in the cafeteria or new tables for the cafeteria, which there aren't any room for, or even new televisions for the cafeteria which serve no purpose and forget to get switched on after the first two weeks of having them, instead of maybe actually spending the money on something useful like hiring a councillor, educating teachers on mental health or having some actual mental health resources, but apparently that seems too much to ask for. The best you get for having mental health issues is an out-of-class card which allows you to speak to your pupil support teacher who really has the ability to do nothing except phone your parents. More irony to be found at the fact there are specific departments are underfunded and have to really stretch their money to make it last while others spend money recklessly, all while the school still has money to waste on bouncy castles and ice cream, admittedly a nice gesture for pupils, but the money could have been better spent. And of course, this review wouldn't be complete without the mention of the schools very obvious bullying problem. For a school that preaches respect and a zero tolerance bullying policy, I've never actually seen any action taken against bullies other than a metaphorical slap on the wrist unless the bullying turns physical. No action is taken against blatant homophobia or transphobia and LGBT pupils are actually encouraged to hide their sexuality or gender orientation, which in turn can be interpreted as teaching them to be ashamed of it. Very little action is taken against racism except a brief telling off. So the school has it fair share of problems. But if your child is high achieving, white, cisgender, straight, neurotypical and completely able bodied, feel free to send them here. If not, maybe think again.
